Fruits are the gift of nature, as they are rich in vitamins, minerals, fibers and many more nutrients. Then how can they cause health hazards?
Here is the synopsis from various recent studies which proves risks of eating too many fruits.
Health risk of eating fruits:
What is the threat of eating too many fruits: Eating too much of fruits are dangerous for human health. It is known fact that fruits contain low calories when compared to other foods like meat, rice and grains.
Wrong Assumption: It’s an assumption that we can eat more and more fruits as it has low calories and rich in vitamins. However, it is the wrong opinion. The reason is, even low-calorie food like fruits can add more calories if we take a large quantity.
Can lead to gastrointestinal problems in few people: When compared to other food items, fruits are rich in fiber which helps to relieve constipation. However, eating too much fiber leads gastrointestinal problems as our digestive system cannot digest the fiber.
Fruits don’t have all nutrients that our body need: Even though fruits are rich in nutrients, it doesn’t have few nutrients which our body requires. For example, fruits don’t contain essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins B12, A*, D, zinc, and other minerals like calcium, heme- iron, etc. We can get these nutrients from vegetables, cereals, grains, meat, etc
Few fruits don’t suit for your health: Few fruits like bananas are rich in carbohydrates and sugars. So it is not a suitable diet for the people who are suffering from type 2 diabetes.
Timing to eat fruits: Eating fruits on an empty stomach is good for health, but this is not recommended for the people who are suffering from ulcers and gastrointestinal problems because it may increase the risk of such kind of problems.
Meals and fruits at once?: Eating fruits along with meals may cause digestive tract discomfort and heartburn for the people who are suffering from gastrointestinal/acidity problems.
So, it is advised by dietitians to take the limited quantity of fruits frequently.
Apart from these reasons, studies say that even eating fruits in limited quantity can cause health hazards.
Diseases caused due to eating fruits without washing: It’s quite common that farmers use pesticides to kill insects and protect crops from diseases which also helps plants in giving a high yield. The problem starts here. These pesticides are supposed to spray on plants but not on fruits. However, few quantities of pesticides are entering into the fruits, and most of them still reside on the heels of fruits as farmers are spraying directly on fruits to reduce the risk of damaging the fruits from insects.
Eating fruits that consist of these chemicals can cause a different kind of health problems like asthma, allergies, hypersensitivity, cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive/fertility problems, and fetal development.
Problems with artificial ripen fruits:
Along with these chemical pesticides, the fruit vendors are also using some more chemicals for ripening of fruits. For example, ethylene is used for ripening of bananas and different kind of fruits. This ethylene gas can create health hazards in neurological systems. It even affects eyes and skin and many other health problems on human health.
Calcium carbide is another chemical often used by fruit vendors for artificial ripening of fruits like apples, mangoes, bananas, papayas, etc. Calcium carbide is a known carcinogen. (Carcinogen is an agent that have the ability to alter human cells into cancerous cells.)
How can we remove these chemicals from fruits
Soak the fruits in hot salt water for 5 to 10 minutes and then wash with normal water. Squeeze a lemon in water along with salt to wash the fruits for best results. After washing the fruits, allow them to dry for some time. This procedure best suits for fruits that we consume along with heels like apples, grapes, strawberry, etc.
Finally, what is the best time to eat fruits?
Those who are not suffering from gastrointestinal problems can consume fruits with empty stomach other than citrus fruits. However, it is advisable not to consume fruits immediately after meals. Eat fruits giving a break of 30 minutes to one hour after meals. If you had heavy meals give a break of 3 to 4 hours gap to eat fruits. It is better to avoid eating fruits at bedtime as the sugars in fruits may spike up your energy, and it may disturb your sleep.
