Few days back, one voluntary organization came to my apartments requesting for a small donation that will be used for needy children. One of my colleagues, he is also a neighbor at the apartment, refused to donate. He said,”I am not interested, I don’t spend even one rupee for charity”. I was shocked with his response, because, he is one of the top paid employees in my company. 500 Rupees should not be a huge amount to him.
Thinking about my colleague’s lifestyle and spending habits, I though following would be few reasons why he is not willing to donate Rs 500.
Why should I donate, I don’t.
The reasons in his words….
This Rs 500 is my one movie expense at Multiplex (This is just the cost of 2 tickets, assuming if I go with one partner. The actual costs may vary if I include traveling cost, buying snacks at the theater, etc.). So, how can I sacrifice my movie for a poor child who can utilize this money for the entire month for lunch where I can spend that within 3 hours?
This Rs 500 is the cost of my rental cab where I can travel up to 10 KMs. You know, I hate using public transport service, I prefer only rental cab when my vehicle is not available. It may take Rs 20 to 30 if I utilize metro rail or buses to travel 10 Km, but I don’t. So, how can I sacrifice a trip for a poor child who can use this money for books and uniform?
This Rs 500 can be used to purchase a Whisky bottle. How do you expect me to sacrifice a liquor bottle for a sick child who can utilize this money for the hospital and medical expenses?
This Rs 500 can be used for my one-week cigarette expenses. How do you expect me to sacrifice my one-week cigarette costs for a sick child who can utilize this money to come out of malnutrition?
This Rs 500 is not even sufficient to buy a branded shirt. How do you expect me to sacrifice this money for a poor child who can utilize this money to buy clothes and blankets to protect themselves from cool weather?
This Rs 500 is not even sufficient to buy a small size cool cake for my friend’s birthday party that we want to smear on friend’s face. How do you expect me to sacrifice this money to a poor child who can utilize this money to buy eatables for evening snacks?
This Rs 500 is the cost of one plate buffet meal that I paid at my Kid’s birthday celebration at a 3-star hotel for which I invited my colleagues, friends, neighbors and family members. How do you expect me to sacrifice the cost of just one plate meal with which a poor child can utilize this money to have dinner for an entire month?
Guys, don’t you think he can’t even donate just Rs 500 once in a while for a good cause. But he never did it because he don’t like to donate his money. But he doesn’t bother to spend the same money for entertainment, smoking, drinking alcohol, etc.
Donating once in a while just Rs 500 will not empty your pockets or bank balance. But remember, it will help a lot to the poor, needy people.
Donation of Rs 500 can help a poor child to survive a month. Meaning, Rs 500 is sufficient for a poor child to have three meals a day(If it is effectively utilized)
Just think once my dear friend!
