We may need to wait another 1500 years to hear from Aliens, a new study says.
As per the high probability estimates and matching it with the mediocrity system into a new equation, Cornell astronomers say extraterrestrials(Aliens) likely won’t phone home – or Earth – for 1,500 years.
As per wiki : The mediocrity principle suggests, given the existence of life on Earth, that life typically exists on Earth-like planets throughout the universe.
As per wiki: Extraterrestrial life is life that does not originate from Earth. It is also called alien life.
“We haven’t heard from aliens yet, as space is a big place – but that doesn’t mean no one is out there,” said 19 Year old Cornell student Evan Solomonides.
When can we expect reply from Aliens?
“It’s possible to hear any time at all, but it becomes likely we will have heard around 1,500 years from now,” said Solomonides. “Until then, it is possible that we appear to be alone – even if we are not. But if we stop listening or looking, we may miss the signals. So we should keep looking.”
The Fermi paradox says billions of stars in the galaxy that are similar to the Sun, many of which are billions of years older than Earth. With high probability, some of these stars will have Earth-like planets, and if the Earth is typical, some might develop intelligent life. Some of these civilizations might develop interstellar travel, a step the Earth is investigating now.
How do we search and communicate with Aliens?
Searching for aliens means sending out signals to various stars. Just like Television and radio signals, these signals are sent into space. These signals travel at the speed of light. These signals have been traveling from Earth for 80 years. For aliens receiving these transmissions, they would likely be unreadable as the aliens would need to decode light waves into sounds. Then aliens would have to resolve 3,000 human languages to understand the message.
Broadcast signals already reached many planets!
As per the estimates, Earth’s broadcast signals have reached every star within about 80 light-years from the sun. There are around 8,531 stars and 3,555 Earthlike planets in 80 light years from the sun. However, our Milky Way galaxy alone contains 200 billion stars.
How does study estimate 1500 years for Aliens to contact Earth?
“Even our normal, typical spiral galaxy – not exceptionally large compared to other galaxies – is vast beyond imagination,” said Solomonides. “Those numbers are what make the Fermi Paradox so counter-intuitive. We have reached so many stars and planets, surely we should have reached somebody by now, and in turn been reached … this demonstrates why we appear to be alone.”
After combining the equations for the Fermi paradox and the mediocrity principle, the study suggests Earth might hear from an alien civilization when approximately half of the Milky Way Galaxy has been signaled in about 1,500 years.
Finally, what is mediocrity principle:
The idea of the mediocrity principle is that Earth is not a unique location in the universe, we should not be anything special in the universe.
